Who participates in Reading Classic?
A public school, private school, home school, or library group in the State of Nebraska may participate by entering a team on the Reading Classic website. Up to six students comprise a team, with up to four participating at a give time.

What does a County Contest do?
All local teams for each divisions compete at the county level with other teams from their county to qualify for the state competition. The county competition will be held at sites designated by the county contact person. Counties with only one school with one team in a division competition can be sent the question and hold their own individual county competition, sending their team to state as long as they score a recommended 50% or higher on the county questions. With adequate notice, members of the committee may be available to assist as needed. Questions for all divisions for each county will be provided by the committee. Questions and procedures will be identical in all counties.

How to qualify for Reading Classic Finals?
The team from each division with the greatest number of accumulated team points will be eligible for the state competition. The team from each division with the second greatest number of accumulated team points will serve as alternate. Should the first team be unable to compete in the state competition, the alternate team will be the designated team to participate.

What are the County procedures?

There will be 5 rounds of 10 questions in each round.

Each of ten questions will be read with 20 seconds allowed after each question for the team to write their responses (30 seconds for Div. I).

Teams should confer QUIETLY so other teams do not hear answers.

At the end of each round, three minutes will be allowed for the teams to ask for questions repeated and/or responses changed.

Spelling doesn't have to be correct, just close enough for judges to understand meaning.

Answer sheets will be collected at the end of each round.

The validity of team answers will be at the discretion of the judges. NO 1/2 points nor partial points.

The team with the most correct answers at the end of 5 rounds will advance to the state semifinal rounds. In the event of a tie, additional rounds of 5 questions each will be administered to the teams.

If a team wishes to change an answer, they must cross out the first answer and write the new answer.

After answer sheets are collected, Coaches will have 30 seconds maximum between rounds to substitute a team member and/or coach their team.

Coaches may look at the response sheets at the end of the competition, but they must be turned back into the judge and may not leave the competition area.

Judges will NOT coach on contest day.

Who writes the questions?
Encourage your students staff and the community to submit questions. This encourages reading as a family and community affair. All submitted questions will become the property of the Reading Classic Committee. The more questions submitted from your district, the greater likelihood that students will be familiar with some of the questions at the county and state competitions. All questions and current events must be submitted via the website question form. This includes the individual's name, school, the question clearly stated, and the answer clearly documented with page number. Please fill out the form completely as this enables those preparing questions to do a better job verifying answers.. Please avoid author, and title questions. Higher level questions concerning plot, theme, etc. are appreciated. Avoid multiple interpretation questions. Verify questions with specific answers and page numbers. 4. Please verify and edit questions to be submitted.
